What damage is caused by smoking?

Most kinds of damage caused by smoking are well known to all of us. When you inhale smoke on a regular basis, it damages the mucous membranes of your lungs. Heavy smoking can increase the chances of cancer (mainly, lung cancer, but esophagus, throat or mouth cancer can also be caused by smoking), respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, etc., and it can also affect male potency and even cause asthma in smokers’ children.

These are known and obvious facts, so there is only one recommendation for you: Quit smoking!

What happens to your body when you quit smoking?

It does not matter which method you chose – when you quit smoking, it will put your body into deep shock.
Even if you smoked relatively little, your dependence on nicotine and other substances is strong, and it can affect your body for months or even years.

The beginning of this process is the hardest. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms are strong cravings for a cigarette, problems with concentration, sleeping difficulties, nervousness, and even depression. At the same time, as you abstain from smoking, your symptoms gradually become weaker until they resolve.

The more you persist in quitting smoking completely, the more your breathing will improve. What can you do to help your body recover?
Your phlegm will disappear almost immediately, and your lungs will start recovering from the years of being polluted with smoke. On the other hand, your body will crave more food and drink as a substitute.

What can you do to help your body recover?

Quitting smoking is the main thing, and it constitutes 90% of success, however, there are several ways to help your body and to create a healthy routine without the nicotine.

  • Drinking plenty of water
Drinking water is always healthy, but it is especially important when your body adapts to a new way of life. Drinking plenty of water quenches your thirst and lowers your increased appetite caused by having quit smoking.
  • Exercise
Specific exercises can help your lungs widen your blood vessels and eliminate toxins from your body. Daily breathing exercises and yoga can also contribute to this process.
  • Balanced menu
Healthy proteins, non-harmful fats, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes are the basis of non-fattening but nutritious diet for you after you quit smoking.
  • Appropriate dietary supplements
There are many specific products and nutritional supplements to help heavy smokers overcome withdrawal. Plants such as white pine, prostrate knotweed and black elderberry are known to strengthen the immune system and help treat respiratory problems.
